The Great Loop
America’s Great Loop is the continuous waterway that circumnavigates the eastern portion of North America across the Great Lakes, through the inland rivers, around the Gulf of Mexico, and along the Atlantic Seaboard,. It is sometimes referred to as the Great Circle Route. We will be leaving in the fall of 2007 from Thunder Bay, Ontario and travelling across Lake Superior, down Lake Michigan to Chicago. There we take the Illinois River to St. Louis, switch to the Mississippi River for 150 miles to Cairo, Illinois. We swing to port and up the Ohio River to the Ten-Tomm system which takes us 600 miles to Mobile, Alabama on the Gulf of Mexico. Heading east along the Intra Coastal Waters (ICW) we will journey to Fort Myers and from there take the canal and various locks across the Florida penninsula. Then we will make our way to Nassau in the Bahamas, where we will stay through til spring.
The journey north will include spectacular vistas, coral reefs and stops in important cities along the eastern coast.
